10-Week Online Course: Construction Equipment and Methods

This is a 10-week course that runs from January 16 – March 27, 2023, and gives students an overall understanding of construction equipment and selected construction methods. 

Students should expect to spend 3-5 hours per week on course work.

It is important that the student keeps up with the class and does not fall behind. Course modules will be made available to students on Sunday of each week.  Class work must be completed by the following Monday.  Students will not be able to work ahead of the class although reading assignments will be made available in advance.  Actual dates that modules will become available will be posted in advance on the course calendar.

Event Details

Construction Equipment and Methods will run from January 16 – March 27, 2023. The purpose of this Construction Equipment and Methods, introduces the student to construction equipment and selected heavy civil construction methods. This includes economy, selection, and productivity of common construction equipment and construction procedures for heavy civil construction and site development. The course will cover an introduction to equipment economics and utilization, determining earthwork quantities, equipment production rates, fundamentals of earth moving and excavating, loading and hauling equipment, cranes, compressors, pumps and much more.. 

Class Organization and Grading:

The following table lists the learning modules, the maximum point value a student can receive within each module, and the week in which the modules must be finished.

In each module there are discussions (10 points), homework (10 points), and a quiz (10 points)

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this class you should be able to:

  1. Become familiar with construction equipment and their capabilities.
  2. Learn how to best utilize construction equipment on site work and heavy civil projects.
  3. Understand standard terminology, designations, sizes, and gradations of equipment.
  4. Properly select heavy equipment based on applications, utilization, productivity, and other factors.
  5. Understand the elements of equipment cost and evaluating investment alternatives.
  6. Utilize the CAT Handbook to determine production rates for heavy equipment
  7. Develop a basic understanding of unit price and earthwork quantities
  8. Demonstrate awareness of construction safety related to earth moving operations
  9. Describe the characteristics of heavy civil construction projects.
  10. Develop a structured estimating process in unit price estimating

Participants will be provided with a text book that they may keep. Textbooks will be mailed out prior to class starting.

The deadline to receive a refund for event registration is (7) seven business days before the event. Cancellations received after the stated deadline will not be eligible for a refund.
