10-Week Online Course: Risk Management and Problem Solving

This is a 10-week course that runs from April 13 - June 21, 2026, and focuses on identifying, managing, and solving risk-related construction problems as part of construction supervisor continuing education.

Learn how to utilize specific methods to reduce risk, prevent loss, and ensure a safe working environment. We will discuss the delegation of responsibility for safety, equipment maintenance, and common construction hazards. You will learn how to proactively reduce risk within the construction work environment. This class, like our other construction supervisor continuing education courses, will review proactive and reactive problem solving strategies in addition to the documentation, insurance policies, and reference materials that are relevant to what happens in the field.

These courses can be used toward both the Certificate in Project Management and the Certificate in Construction Supervision: Building. This class is 100% online. Students should expect to spend 3-5 hours a week on course work from April 13 - June 21, 2026.

Each week you will have online class discussions (15 points) and a quiz (10 points).It is important that the student keep up with the class and not fall behind in any of our construction supervisor continuing education courses. Students should provide at least four contributions to the class discussions each week to gain the maximum points. 

Course modules will be made available to students on Sunday of each week. Class work must be completed before the following Monday. Students will not be able to work ahead of the class although reading assignments will be made available in advance. Actual dates that modules will become available will be posted in advance on the course calendar.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the risk management duties of the construction supervisor
  • Identify and encourage human factors to achieve a zero accident workplace.
  • Be able to establish a good construction safety program for your crew and job site even if your company does not have a formal safety program
  • Explain potential hazards similar to those that create the highest number of accidents and how they can be prevented
  • Understand how to manage crisis situations
  • Know how to prepare a plan for project loss control that includes construction insurance, protection of underground utilities, and controlling job site theft
  • Understand the role that construction contractual relationships play in controlling job site safety. This subject includes managing subcontractors for safety compliance
  • Know how to participate in a safety inspection conducted by a regulatory agency
  • Recognize risk within the construction work environment
  • Be able to explain the indirect and hidden costs of construction accidents
  • Understand the roles of commitment, attitudes, and training within an effective safety program
  • Know where to find reference material and information about OSHA standards, Guide Publications, and regulatory information
  • Know how to conduct accident investigations
  • Explain Experience Modification Rate and determine the effect the rate has on your labor costs. Be able to perform calculations using the EMR
  • Know how to recognize and control substance abuse on the job site

Students are responsible for purchasing the course e-book, Unit 6, Risk Management and Problem Solving Participants Manual. The cost of each e-book is approximately $50.

The deadline to receive a refund for event registration is (7) seven business days before the event. Cancellations received after the stated deadline will not be eligible for a refund.
